Across the ocean
Under the blue sky
The sun is rising

It’s climbing so high

I know a place where
We can be freer
We will be stronger
So long, we be keepin our…

Hooope
Talking about tikva o-ooh
Talkin bout my hoooo-ope
Talkin bout tikvah, o-ooh

This is my homeland
This is my story
I build my future
With ancient glory

So take my hand now
We’ll be together
The days are brighter
And we be dreamin’ of…

(Falafel just got real)

Hooope
Talking about tikva o-ooh
Talkin bout my hoooo-ope
Talkin bout tikvah, o-ooh

“Anu machrizim bezot | We hereby declare
Al hakamat medinat Yehudit | the establishment of a Jewish state
Be’eretz Yisrael | in the land of Israel
Talkin bout tikvah, o-ooh (Od lo Od lo Od lo Avda Tikvateinu | We haven’t lost our hope)

Oh oh oh…
And we be singin of…

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Three government contracts attorneys and a senior public policy advisor with federal procurement experience have joined Barnes & Thornburg LLP’s Washington, D.C., office, bolstering the firm’s capabilities in government procurement, defense programs, and homeland security.

Attorneys Dorn “Bo” McGrath, David Hickey, Will Jack, and senior public policy advisor Joseph Corrigan have joined the firm from Greenberg Traurig LLP’s Washington, D.C., office. “We are really excited to welcome Bo, David, Will, and Joe to our Washington, D.C., office,” said Karen McGee, managing partner of Barnes & Thornburg’s D.C. office. “Their arrival is the latest sign of our continued commitment to grow this office by adding seasoned laterals across strategic areas of focus.”

McGrath noted that he and his colleagues were drawn to Barnes & Thornburg because of the firm’s efficient and sophisticated methods of offering services to clients who seek greater control over their outside legal costs. He also said that he and his peers are excited about the move as it provides the opportunity to offer additional services of interest to clients in the defense and homeland security industries.

“Their extensive experience and skill sets are a great complement to the many key services we offer clients, including through our litigation, corporate, intellectual property, and labor and employment practices,” said Alan A. Levin, Barnes & Thornburg’s managing partner.

McGrath and Hickey are partners, and Will Jack is of counsel in Barnes & Thornburg’s Corporate Department; Corrigan is a member of the firm’s Governmental Services & Finance Department and Federal Relations Group.

About the Attorneys

Bo McGrath has more than 30 years of experience representing contractors, subcontractors, owners, and engineering firms involved in projects throughout the United States and the Middle East. He focuses his practice primarily on federal, state, and local government contracts and construction contracts, including bid protests, claims, litigation, arbitration, and alternative dispute resolution. He also has extensive experience in government contract accounting, contract compliance, ethics programs, and matters involving fraud investigations and suspension or debarment.

McGrath is a member of the American Bar Association’s Public Contract Law Section, the District of Columbia Bar and the Virginia State Bar. He earned his law degree from the George Washington University Law School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Davidson College.

David Hickey has more than 15 years of experience as a government contracts attorney and government affairs professional representing clients on a wide spectrum of legal and legislative matters related to federal contracts and defense and national security issues. Hickey, a former U.S. Army infantry officer, has years of experience advising clients on procurement and compliance issues, including conducting internal investigations and defending clients facing government inquiries, audits, or investigations. He represents clients on contract disputes, and drafts and negotiates teaming agreements, compliance agreements, contracts, and subcontracts. He also advises contractors on due diligence matters related to the purchase or sale of a government contractor, including small business contracting issues.

Prior to his private law firm practice, Hickey served as a staff investigator for the U.S. Senate Committee on governmental affairs and special investigations. He also was a manager in the U.S. House of Representatives, Office of the Clerk, where he implemented ethics responsibilities under the Lobbying Disclosure Act, Ethics in Government Act, House Gift and Travel Rules and the Federal Election Campaign Act. He also has served as an in-house counsel for General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems.

Hickey earned his law degree from the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Military Institute.

Will Jack has represented contractors at the Government Accountability Office, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and Boards of Contract Appeals. He has also conducted internal investigations on contractor compliance with the Federal Acquisition Regulation, performed risk assessments for product liability issues associated with government-funded technologies, counseled contractors on intellectual property issues, and assisted clients on the government contract aspects of mergers and acquisitions. In addition, he prepared policies and procedures for ethics and compliance programs; drafted subcontracts, teaming agreements, and technology transfer control plans; and represented contractors in qui tam suits and government investigations.

Will Jack earned his law degree cum laude from the American University Washington College of Law and his bachelor’s degree from Bucknell University.

Senior Public Policy Advisor Joseph Corrigan has a deep understanding of the U.S. defense market, with a special emphasis on military hardware and equipment, federal procurement of goods and services, policy issues associated with defense depots, and in the construction and engineering services markets. He also assists clients with permits from the Army Corps of Engineers as well as represents municipalities or companies with an interest in Corps of Engineers civil works projects or programs.

He interacts with numerous parts of the federal government, including the Department of Defense, Congressional Defense Committees, and the Army Corps of Engineers, where he previously served for many years. Earlier in his career he served as a legislative liaison for the Secretary of the Army. For three years, he was the Army’s key point person on Capitol Hill for Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), land conveyances, and Army leasing programs.

Corrigan earned his master’s degree from Purdue University and his bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Many Tioga County voters are tired of a legal system driven more by ideology than practicality, of measures that impoverish rich people or deprive them of basic rights in order to prove some discredited social theory or cultural belief.

It’s early yet for a full accounting of the legal damage Tioga County has done to itself with its no sense District Attorney’s actions.

Lunatics, Tea Party People and Wall Street Protesters are taking over our cities and courts.

A business man, Calvin Harris, was denied a fair trial due to the Tioga County Courts. The District Attorney often exceeded the bounds of permissible advocacy during summation, thereby depriving Mr. Harris of a fair trial.

Tioga County had been tainted against Mr. Harris by trial publicity. The prosecution's case has several puzzling flaws. Mr. Harris family owned several car dealerships. However, many Tioga County residents are experiencing financial problems, and they cannot keep current on their mortgages and their cars payments. They are angry enough about the economy to blame the "Harris Family" for their woes. “ I cannot have a nice car, but the rich man is behind bars,’ they think.

Mr. Harris’ conviction is not supported by legally sufficient evidence and is against the weight of the evidence. His wife had a long history of drug abuse and she was romantically involved with two men during the months prior to her disappearance. She had a wild life and weird friends. Other people had motives to cause Mrs. Harris to disappear.

Calvin Harris : guilty for being rich

It’s early yet for a full accounting of the legal damage Tioga County has done to itself with its no sense District Attorney’s actions.

Lunatics, Tea Party People and Wall Street Protesters are taking over our cities and courts.

A business man, Calvin Harris, was denied a fair trial due to the Tioga County Courts. The District Attorney often exceeded the bounds of permissible advocacy during summation, thereby depriving Mr. Harris of a fair trial.

Tioga County had been tainted against Mr. Harris by trial publicity. The prosecution’s case has several puzzling flaws. Mr. Harris family owned several car dealerships. However, many Tioga County residents are experiencing financial problems, and they cannot keep current on their mortgages and their cars payments. They are angry enough about the economy to blame the “Harris Family” for their woes.

At the time, Mr. Harris’ unfitted wife disappeared, the couple was involved in a divorce action that she had commenced in January 2001.

Neither the victim’s body nor any murder weapon has ever been found.

Practically every New Yorker has a bitter divorce story, even if it’s not his or her own.

Prosecutor stated that Mr. Harris murdered his wife as a means to end their divorce action —a business appraisal was pending — and to avoid paying her a substantial sum of money in a settlement. “However, evidence of motive “does not establish any element of the crime, and cannot take the place of proof of [a defendant's] actual commission of the crime” (People v Marin, 65 NY2d 741, 745 1985); see People v Giuliano, 65 NY2d 766, 767-72 [1985]).

A few months ago, a state appellate court denied Mr. Harris’ appeal (In a 3-1 decision) of a 2009 guilty verdict for second-degree murder of his unfaithful wife, Michele Harris, who was last seen the evening of Sept. 11, 2001.

Mr. Harris always cooperated with the investigators.

Justice Bernard J. Malone Jr., the lone vote dissident, said that Mr. Harris’ indictment should be reversed and dismissed, and at the least, Mr. Harris should get a new trial due to insufficient evidence.

“The evidence is legally insufficient to prove that defendant killed Harris, and that it is also insufficient to prove that he did so intentionally, both of which the People were required to prove beyond a reasonable doubt,” wrote the brave Judge.

But there is a ray of hope to Calvin Harris, an innocent man, who is serving out his sentence of 25 years to life at the Auburn Correctional Facility. The Court of Appeals has agreed to hear the case sometime next month.

I pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and for Mr. Harris soon to be a free man.

“The Captain of Her Heart,” the hit of the Swiss duo Double, was an international success, reaching #8 in the UK Singles Chart and #16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Double (pronounced dubb-el -) formed in 1983 in Zürich, Switzerland, by Felix Haug (drums and keyboards) and Kurt Maloo (guitar and vocals) out of the trio Ping Pong of which both Maloo and Haug were members.

Double released three 12″ maxi singles—“Naningo” (1983), “Rangoon Moon,” and “Woman of the World” (1984)—before they had a chance to record their first album.

The black-and-white music video for “Rangoon Moon” became a cult clip in Europe and got air play on VH1 in the United States.

Two years later, Double became known worldwide with their first hit single, “The Captain of Her Heart,” from their first album, Blue, a best-seller.

In 1987, Maloo and Haug recorded their second and last album, Dou3le, visualized best in the performance of the legendary Swiss mime group Mummenschanz in the award-winning music video for their song “Devils Ball,” featuring Herb Alpert on trumpet.

Double started to work on a third album in late 1988, but due to artistic differences, disbanded a few months later.

Maloo continued his career solo again and released, under his own name, Single (1990), Soul & Echo (1995), Loopy Avenue (2006), and Summer of Better Times (2009). Since 2007, he has been performing with his own band and played several concerts and festivals, including NuNote Lounge Fest in Moscow. Haug died of a heart attack in 2004.

Maloo, talked to Freddy de Freitas, about his career, life, family, and dreams.

Who’s Kurt Maloo? Who’s Kurt Meier?

I was born Kurt Meier and decided to take the artist name Kurt Maloo in 1975 to sign my paintings. I’ve chosen Maloo for phonetical reasons only, not knowing if the name really exists. Almost 30 years later I got an email from Rohinton Maloo, a business man in Mumbai, India, asking me whatlost cousin of his tribe I was. He told me the story of the Maloo family, of which about 50 people still live all over the world. They migrated from Persia and patriarch of the tribe’s name was Mal, which means big. Arriving in India they called him and his people Maloo.

When did you first start singing?

I was twelve and we had a performance in school around Christmas. We were three musicians wearing white long johns and white shirts in a dark room with UV-light. No one wanted to sing, so I said yes. I think we played Twist and Shout by the Beatles.

Have you always been in the music business?

I used to be a painter in my early twenties, but then gave it up for a career as a musician.

Did Arnold and Babette Meier influence your career? What is your first memory of being inspired by music?

My father was not musical at all, but my mother played the mandolin and came from a musical family, that gave home concerts in the old days. She used to sing and dance with me a lot.

When did you realize you could live as a singer?

I made music long before I was able to live from the royalties of my songs. The Captain Of Her Heart changed everything.

Where did you meet Felix Haug ?

I met him back in 1979 during a music workshop near Zurich, Switzerland.

In 1983, you and Mr. Haug created Double.? What was the concept?

There was no concept. We had a trio before called Ping Pong and when the bass player left we looked at each other and saw Double.

When writing your songs, is there a particular process you undertake?

I collect ideas for lyrics or complete lyrics in a small black book. When I start to compose I check if there’s anything that might fit. If not I write a few words to set a mood and then go from there.

You achieved international success in 1986 with “The Captain of Her Heart”. What Did you and Mr. Haug expect to happen with this song?

We liked the song very much, but didn’t believe it was a single since music played on the radio had to be danceable or at least more uptempo in the mid eighties. Then some secretaries at the record company started to whistle the piano melody in the office and the A&R got convinced it could be a hit.

Did “The Captain of Her Heart” make you a millionaire?

If it did where’s all the money now ? hahaha…

What particular song does Mr. Maloo find hard to sing live, one that brings back a lot of emotion?

Remorse

You turned 51 years old on 16 April 2004, two weeks later Mr. Haug died (May 1) of a heart attack .How do you take control of your emotions ?

That was a shock indeed. We haven’t been making music together for a long time, although I considered him still my best friend.

Who is your inspiration?

My daydreams

Where would you most like to perform?

Open Air in Rio de Janeiro in wintertime.

Critics often described your music as “heartbroken soul.” What’s the spin on that?

There’s heart and soul in it. Not so much broken though. Soul in the sense of emotional content, not musical style.

You are from Switzerland, your wife and your youngest son from Germany, your daughter from France. Is your home a section of U.N ?

haha….yes, I considered myself always citizen of the world. Nations are artificial homes. My home is where my heart is.

Do you have an official language at your home?

High German. The way it’s written. My mother tongue is a strange German dialect, that’s spoken in Switzerland.

Is there any chance your kids follow your path or your wife’s footsteps ?

No, both are studying design.

What’s the best piece of advice you have received?

Tomorrow is another day.

What advice would you give to other musicians trying to get off the ground?

Let your music fly high, but keep your feet on the ground.

What hidden talents do you have?

I can be funny, believe it or not.

I have to ask you, what is your favor food?

Home cooking

Any special place for vacation?

Anything warm and beautiful embedded in a cultural background. I’m

getting bored very quickly.

If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing?

Writing, traveling and listening to stories of others.

What doesn’t anybody know about the singer Kurt Maloo?

Not much. Kurt Meier has become Kurt Maloo over the years and my public

image is not far away from my private life. I’m writing a book about my life right now and when it’s finished there won’t be many secrets left.

Where can we buy your music?

There are links on my website kurtmaloo.com and basically on iTunes and Amazon.
